Laws and regulations

The use of humane endpoints is laid down in various laws, directives, guidelines and Codes of current best practices. The most important of these laws and regulations are given below:

• European Union (EU) Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection for animals used for scientific purposes (2010)
• Council of Europe (CoE) European Convention for the protection of vertebrate animals used for experimental and other scientific purposes (1986, ETS 123) and Appendix A to the convention, on the accomendation and care of animals
• US regulations with regard to the use of laboratory animals (USDA/ NIH)
• OECD Guidance Document on the Recognition, Assessment, and Use of Clinical Signs as Humane endpoints for Experimental Animals Used in Safety Evaluation
• UKCCCR (United Kingdom Coordinating Committee on Cancer Research): Guidelines for the Welfare of animals in Experimental Neoplasia
